Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland were worried on the set of The Odyssey when they heard lead actor Matt Damon screaming repeatedly in the trailer. Did Damon hurt? Or a big fight over the phone? Pattinson had his doubts, but later found out that Damon was just raising his voice to sound older, like the battle-weary Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s epic.
“Matt was in the trailer next to me making all this noise,” Pattinson said in a video interview with MTV UK. “He’s such a nice guy…I thought he was on the phone, but I thought he was completely psychotic. He just kept screaming, screaming, screaming. I thought he was having a really bad experience in the bathroom. He was just raising his voice to look older. He’s really taking years out of his life by doing this.”
Holland also heard Damon’s shout-out, calling his prep work “amazing.”
Oscar nominee Damon completely transforms in ‘The Odyssey’. He revealed on the New Heights podcast earlier this year that he dropped his weight to 167 pounds for the movie.
“I lost a lot of weight.[Nolan]wanted me to be lean and strong,” Damon said. “Thanks to another thing I did with my doctor, I stopped eating gluten. I used to walk around between 185 and 200, but I played that movie at 167 the whole time. And I hadn’t been that light since high school. So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet.”
It’s a lot different than when Damon had to gain weight for his character. The Oscar nominee told EW at the time that he gained 30 pounds for 2009’s The Informant by “eating like crazy and drinking dark beer.” “In between meals on set, I would eat a number one value meal at McDonald’s and have Doritos on top. It was heaven.”
“The Odyssey” will be released in theaters on July 17th by Universal Pictures.
