Have you ever wondered how Sylvester Stallone became Rocky? Peter Farrelly’s new biographical drama I Play Rocky, starring Grand Army actor Anthony Ippolito as Stallone, will answer that question in this behind-the-scenes dramatization of the 1976 classic sports drama.
Amazon MGM’s official synopsis for I Play Rocky reads, “This film tells the true story of Sylvester Stallone and his unwavering belief that he should not only have written Rocky, but should have become Rocky Balboa.”
The film’s supporting cast includes Stephen James as Carl Weathers, as well as AnnaSophia Robb, Matt Dillon, Toby Kebbell, Tracy Letts, Jay Duplass, and Robert Morgan. Farrelly, who directed the Best Picture winner “Green Screen,” returns to more dramatic territory with “I Play Rocky,” following Amazon’s R-rated comedies “Ricky Stanicki” and “Balls Up.”
Ippolito has experience playing the 1970s acting icon. He starred as Al Pacino in Paramount+’s limited series “The Offer,” which tells the story of the making of “The Godfather.” He’s now taking on the role of Stallone, who famously made Rocky for less than $1 million. The film was the biggest box office hit of 1976 and won the Oscar for Best Picture. The original “Rocky” cemented its place in Hollywood history and later spawned several sequels and a “Creed” spinoff series.
“I Play Rocky” will be released in theaters this November by Amazon MGM. Watch the trailer below.
