A prince appears in Netflix’s animated movie Steps.
Daniel Radcliffe will voice a royal character in Netflix’s upcoming animated film Steps. Also joining the cast are Young Maginot as Jeff from “The Heartthrob” and Peter Dinklage as Roderick from “The Muscle.”
Steps, directed by Alice Tswe and John Ripa, is a twist on the story of Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters. The animated film follows Lilith (Ali Wong), who is accused of hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand. She accidentally turns her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu) into a frog, leaving the kingdom in the hands of a mean girl who is obsessed with the prince. Lilith must now team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) and a surprisingly dreamy troll to save the kingdom, repair the broken fairy tale, and prove that even so-called “villains” can live happily ever after. Bette Midler rounds out the star ensemble by voicing the Fairy Godmother.
Ripa said of Radcliffe’s casting: “Our dream was for a fairytale prince to be unlike any prince we’ve ever seen, and Daniel made that dream come true.” “He brings an incredibly unique, nuanced, quirky and big-hearted humor to our prince, creating a charming and fun character. We were blown away by Daniel’s range and razor-sharp comedic talent and truly enjoyed working with him.”
“We feel incredibly lucky to have all three of these great talents in our film. Our goal was to break the fairy tale mold by making all the characters three-dimensional and worthy of eternal happiness. That wouldn’t have been possible without Daniel, Peter and Young.”
Tswe called Dinklage “an immense talent,” adding, “Roderick is a murderous nanny who must be motivated by fear and love. Peter balances that with incredible skill, giving the role dignity and humor.”
Tsue shared plot details with Netflix’s Tudam.
“The core of this story is about two sisters who are very different, one who fits perfectly into this fairy tale kingdom and the other who doesn’t, but who realize that they are more similar than different,” Tswe said. “This is a very personal story for me. Growing up as an awkward, artsy Taiwanese kid in suburban New Jersey, I often felt like an outsider and like ‘happily ever after’ wasn’t for me. I wanted to make a film for anyone who has ever felt like they don’t belong, and I wanted to show how one act of kindness can change everything.”
“Step” is scheduled for release later this year.
