Lil Nas X has revealed that he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“I went into rehab for a few months and since then, I’ve been back home trying to get my feet on the ground and out of my head, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or with myself and friends and others in Los Angeles,” the “Old Town Road” singer candidly said in an Instagram video message on Wednesday.
“I now have a therapist and a psychiatrist. They helped me a lot when I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder,” he said.
Lil Nas (real name Montero Hill) said he felt like he “knew for a few years” that he had a mental health condition, but “didn’t want to take medication or have people think of me differently.”
“I’m already black and gay. I’m like, ‘Damn, God.’ Black, gay, bipolar. It’s like I’m living my life in extreme hard mode,” the “Industry Baby” hitmaker, 27, said with a laugh.
“But seriously, I’m doing a lot better. I’m doing better, I’m feeling better, I’m creating more freely, and there’s less fear in my heart,” he explained.
“I’m just smelling the roses. … I’ve been doing music for seven years now.”
Lil Nas told viewers that he has new music in the works.
“I’m excited to take this next chapter with you on this journey. We’ve been through a lot together,” he added.
“Thank you everyone for your patience. I love you guys and all I want to do is keep trying to make you guys proud and make myself proud,” Lil Nas concluded.
Celebrities and fans flooded the two-time Grammy Award winner’s Instagram comments section with positive comments about his revelations.
“And so proud of you Bubba 🫶🏼,” singer Kehlani wrote.
“I’m so proud of you, baby!!! ❤️❤️❤️,” Taraji P. Henson added.
“👏👏👏👏👏,” Andy Cohen said.
“‘Extreme Hard Mode’ is so honest. I’m so proud of it. 🫂,” said singer Durand Bernhardt.
“Men’s health deserves better. Queer men’s health deserves better. Black queer men’s health deserves better. Take care of yourself 🫶,” the fan added.
“Don’t let them box you up!!! You are a gift and everything that comes with you is a gift!! You don’t have to take life seriously, no one makes it out alive!!! 🖤✨🫶🏽,” another netizen wrote.
Lil Nas’ diagnosis comes nearly a year after he was spotted wandering the streets of Los Angeles wearing only white underwear and boots.
The pop star was arrested on the spot after allegedly punching a police officer in the face before being admitted to hospital.
He was charged with four felonies, including assaulting a police officer and resisting a police officer, for allegedly attacking police officers who tried to restrain him.
Lil Nas pleaded not guilty to the charges and in April, a California judge allowed him to enter a mental health diversion program.
