7 minute readSarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have one of Hollywood’s longest marriages, but aside from a few strategic announcements, they’ve managed to keep most of their lives out of the spotlight. This is especially surprising considering how much money Parker made as the iconic Carrie Bradshaw on HBO’s Sex and the City.
The couple seems to really understand each other, which probably comes from the fact that they have a good understanding of their common industry. They started dating in the early ’90s, married in the late ’90s, and had three children.
Here’s a timeline of the couple’s 30+ year relationship.
November 1991
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick met after Parker was introduced to her by her brothers, Pippin and Toby, who founded the Naked Angels Theater Company. Parker and Broderick were already involved in business, and the actor directed plays at the brothers’ theater. Then they were introduced.
1996
After five years of dating, the two finally performed together side by side. Their debut production was on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Parker told the Los Angeles Times, “He’s probably the funniest guy I’ve ever met in my life…He’s very intelligent, very handsome, I think the most handsome man I’ve ever seen in my life. And he’s an inspiration to me. I’m completely mad at him.”
She also talked about how they first got together.
That same year, Parker told the New York Times, “He left a very charming, very subtle message on the machine.” “You know, ‘Hello, I’m Matthew Broderick.’ I had to use my last name.”
May 1997
On May 19, 1997, the couple married at Angel Orensands Synagogue in New York City. They didn’t prepare anyone for the wedding, they invited 100 friends to a party, and then it was a surprise ceremony.
October 2002
On October 28, 2002, the couple welcomed their first child, a boy, whom they named James Wilkie after the actor’s late grandfather, James Broderick.
May 2008
Broderick joins Parker at the premiere of “Sex and the City.”
June 2009
On June 22, 2009, they welcomed twin girls named Marion and Tabitha through a surrogate mother. Parker said in an interview with Vogue that the couple had “tried many times to conceive” conventionally, but with no success.
“If I could, I would give birth as often as possible,” she said. “I cherished every milestone, both good and bad.”
December 2011
After nearly 20 years together, Parker admitted in an interview with the Telegraph that the relationship between the two had not always been smooth sailing.
“We’ve been together for 20 years and we have good days, we have decent days, we have bad days. That’s marriage,” she said. “It’s a relationship. It’s even a friendship. Relationships outside of marriage follow the same path.”
Parker added, “If you’re in a long-term relationship and want a meaningful relationship, you’re going to go through a lot of different periods.”
November 2014
Due to his work as the star of the popular film Sex and the City, Parker is usually the one being interviewed, while Broderick tends to keep a low profile. But on The Meredith Vieira Show, he talked about why things have worked out so well in the long run.
“We are friends first and foremost and we talk a lot,” he said. “Keep talking. I know how cliche that is. Too much silence is definitely not a good idea.”
May 2017
To celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, Parker shared a sweet photo from their wedding on Instagram with the caption, “The baby flew in. Oh my god, I love you. XXX, your wife.”
January 2018
Parker appeared on an episode of Sophia Amoruso’s podcast, Girlboss Radio, and said that she and Broderick often spend time apart due to work commitments.
“I know it sounds crazy, but we have a life where we can be apart and still come back together,” she said. “His work life is what got him here, and my work life is what got me there. I think it was very beneficial in a way because we have a lot to share.”
February 2020
The couple finally got back on stage together again in a Broadway show called Plaza Suite, which made it all the way to pre-run before it was canceled due to the pandemic. They told WSJ in March 2020. According to the magazine, there’s a reason they waited so long to reunite the band.
“We rarely both work at the same time,” Broderick explained.
“This is the first time since we’ve had three kids that we’ve been… even ready,” Parker added. “And that’s difficult. We have a son who will be away soon for the spring semester. But, as I always say, there are families whose parents are in the military and are away from home all the time. You know, it’s a never-ending, impossible situation.”
November 2020
On SiriusXM’s “Quarantined with Bruce,” Broderick shared another little “secret” about his marriage. It’s nothing.
“I don’t know any secrets, but I’m very grateful and I love her. It’s wonderful,” he said.
“You know, as talented as my wife is, I also have to say that she was able to do this play even though she only did it for a short time in Boston… She was very good in this play,” he said. “And I had never performed with her on stage, never performed with her in real life, and I was reminded of how funny and intelligent she is and what a great comedic actor she is. Never mind the comedy part.”
He added, “She’s very good at it, so I want everyone to see her performance.”

Parker appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and said her first kiss with Broderick was “outside my apartment” and the second time was on the way to the subway station.
“I had some Ricola in my mouth, and it was the middle of winter, so I thought it was a third person. So I was on the subway and I spit it into my gloved hand…and it got on my glove,” she said.
And it ruined the gloves.
April 2022
Broderick appeared on WWHL with Andy Cohen and was asked when he knew he wanted to be with Parker forever.
“Oh, the first time I met her,” he said. “I saw her walking down the street and thought, ‘This is it.'”

On their 25th wedding anniversary on May 19, Parker shared an intimate photo of herself and Broderick on Instagram.
September 2022
The couple attended the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2, in which Parker plays the witch Sarah Sanderson, along with their daughters Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell.
May 2023
On Saturday, May 20, Parker shared a photo of a champagne cork emerging from a celebratory bottle celebrating her 26th anniversary with Broderick.
“Happy 26th anniversary, husband,” she wrote in the caption. “It was definitely a nice celebration and we had some really nice champagne. And we had a lot of fun walking home.”
She added, “Oh, the miles we’ve walked together. I love you. XOX, your SJ.”
October 2023
On Thursday, October 5th, Parker and Broderick walked the red carpet at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. In a sweet moment captured by People magazine, Parker paused to check and adjust her husband’s bow tie. She also wore a long black ribbon accessory in her hair, which she held up for a moment to compare with his, before the two returned arm in arm for a photo.
Parker wore a Carolina Herrera gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a peek-a-boo keyhole cutout on the bodice, and a tulle skirt, and accessorized with heels in different shades of black and nude that featured rhinestone-encrusted buckles. She also carried a small silver bucket purse and wore a simple black watch on one wrist. Her husband wore a classic suit and glasses.
January 2024
The couple appeared on stage together again on January 28th at the gala performance of Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” at London’s Savoy Theatre. In the show, the actors play three different couples staying in a room at the famous hotel.
Broderick and Parker were scheduled to star at Broadway’s Hudson Theater in March 2020, but the show was canceled due to the pandemic. It was eventually held, but was suspended after each tested positive for the coronavirus in April 2022. In 2024, it opened exclusively in the West End.
February 2025
Parker shared a behind-the-scenes video from the famous sitcom Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special. According to the caption of her post, she and Broderick have hosted in the past and were excited to participate.
“From the soup to the nuts, it was a thrilling night,” she wrote. “Matthew and I are so honored to sit in Studio 8H and reminisce about 50 glorious years. Wonderful Lorne Michaels!! Perfectly done. Thank you for including us.”

On May 21, Broderick accompanied Parker to the And Just Like That…Season 3 photo call at the Crane Club.
October 2025
Parker attended New York City Ballet’s Fall 2025 Fashion Gala with her husband. Parker appeared in a sculptural Iris Van Herpen dress that featured dramatic sheer wings, and Broderick also appeared on the red carpet.
January 2026
Parker was joined by Broderick and his son James at the Golden Globe Awards event, Golden Eve, held in Los Angeles on January 6th. There, Parker received the Carol Burnett Award for his contributions to television.
The couple appeared together on the red carpet, with Broderick and his son coordinating classic black tuxedos.
May 2026
Parker posted a heartfelt tribute to Broderick on Instagram on May 19th, marking their 29th wedding anniversary. In the post, she shared a series of nostalgic photos, including a framed black-and-white photo of the two of them and a Polaroid-style photo of Broderick kissing her on the forehead.
She captioned the upload, “May 19, 1997 to May 19, 2026. 29 years. And more to come. Beloved, join us in a serenade with your favorite band. Us. Forever young. Xxx, your wife Sarah Jessica.”
