Hayden Panettiere claims her mother and former manager Leslie Vogel once superglued a tooth in her mouth to keep her from losing out on acting jobs.
In her new memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, the actress recalls receiving a dental implant after losing her right front baby tooth at the age of eight.
Even though her dentist, Dr. Bob, suggested Panettiere use denture adhesive to keep the flippers in place, Vogel opted for a quick fix while the mother-daughter duo were on set in Chicago.
Panettiere, now 36, said her mother told her to “give me your tooth and cross your fingers.”
“I dutifully handed the tooth to my mother and watched her squeeze some superglue onto the tooth. Then she stuck the tooth to the flipper,” she wrote in pen.
“I was half out of fear and half out of respect for the MacGyver-like skills I didn’t know she had,” the “Nashville” alum recalls. “I stepped back to give mom some space.”
Panettile said a “little voice” in her head warned her that if the superglue didn’t dry completely, she would be using flippers for the rest of her life.
“I closed my mouth and licked my top teeth,” she recalls. “Then I opened my mouth and smiled.”
Flipper developed a mild speech impediment, causing Panettiere to say, “Lisp sucks. I got the job.”
Page Six has reached out to Vogel for comment.
That’s not the only story Panettiere shares about her 70-year-old estranged mother in her new memoir.
The “Scream VI” actress also recalled the real reason she was allegedly fired from 2002’s “Panic Room.”
Panettiere claims that as an adult, she learned that producers had replaced her as Jodie Foster’s daughter in the film due to a hair dispute.
“The director talked to my mom about cutting her hair to look like Jodie Foster, who always rocks a great bob,” she wrote. “My mom said ‘no’. It was a deal breaker.”
Vogel, whose son Jansen Panettiere died in 2023 at the age of 28, had been managing her daughter’s career since she was a child actor.
However, at the age of 19, Panettiere decided to end the business relationship.
She allegedly told her mother, “I don’t want to work with you anymore. I just want you to be my mom,” to which Vogel allegedly replied, “I owe you.”
The actress also spoke about the alleged conversation during an appearance on the Jay Shetty podcast earlier this month, claiming that “that’s all she said and left.”
The “Remember the Titans” star claimed that Vogel “did not pursue” any kind of mother-daughter relationship with her after that date.
She also confessed that she felt “very guilty” that her career affected her ability to spend time with Jensen.
“I remember one night[my mother]actually turned to me and said, ‘It’s your fault that I miss my son growing up,’ and that was gut-wrenching,” Hayden claimed.
Vogel, meanwhile, applauded her daughter’s revelations and expressed to Page Six that she believes “some of the current drama is just to sell books.”
She added: “After 20 years of trauma, I followed the advice of experts and chose the no-contact path.”
“We know that many parents of children who enjoy entertainment have painfully observed the sometimes self-destructive paths they choose,” Vogel continued. “No parent wants a scenario like this. We want the best for our children and want them to live a peaceful and joyful life.”
“Unfortunately, this is out of our control,” she said. “You can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved.”
