Donald Trump was in the spotlight on Saturday’s SNL UK Weekend Update, with co-hosts Paddy Young and Ania Mariano joking that the president had kept his mouth shut before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attack.
Magliano described the attack by a gunman on a Washington event as “an undeniably horrific event,” before delivering the punchline: “President Donald Trump screamed himself,” and “a few minutes later gunshots rang out.” Young added that Melania Trump was quick to reprimand anyone who downplayed the incident. “We’re real people,” she said, “blinking sideways.”
This segment began with King Charles and Queen Camilla’s visit to Washington. Young said Charles gave Trump a carved bell, which he said ideally the president would “wear on his collar like a cat to warn young women that Trump is approaching.” Mariano described Camila’s bejeweled necklace as “Princess Diana’s horcrux” and reported that the color of her fuchsia dress complemented “King Charles’ iconic hot pink fingers”, while Melania greeted the king with a kiss and “put her chin against Camila to spell help in Morse code”.
A fake professional lip reader appeared as a guest to decipher conversations between leaders, but the results had little to do with diplomacy. Reading his reading, Trump and Charles debated whether it was better to have shrimp growing out of their necks or no shrimp, while Melania and Camila apparently got into an argument about the taste of their potato chips.
On the local front, Mariano took aim at Reform Britain Party leader Nigel Farage’s failure to declare a £5 million ($6.7 million) donation from Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborn. “Mr Farage could be sent an email of up to 400 words if he is found at fault by the Electoral Commission,” Mr Young said. Mr Mariano said the Reform Party’s position was that the donation was a purely personal gift that did not need to be declared, but said that at £5 million “Nigel must have been providing some valuable service”. “So Nigel Farage is my power bottom this week,” she concluded.
Other goals include new endometriosis scanning technology, which Mariano said will be made available to women “as soon as doctors find a way to make it incredibly painful”, and research showing 39% of British young people living at home report a decrease in sexual activity. “So if you want to continue having sex with your parents, leave the house,” Mariano said. A West Ham football team supporter who used a curling iron to cook a steak on the train got a pun from Young: “There was a little bit of beef in it, but I straightened it out.”
In this corner, Young pointed out that the lineup for the upcoming “Celebrity Traitors” series also includes Maya Jama, James Acaster, and Ayatollah Khomeini. “To be honest, I didn’t really like Celebrity Traitor,” Young added. “That’s why I call all the pigs who turned their backs (host of MasterChef Shame) Greg Wallace.”
This week’s “SNL UK” was hosted by Amy Lou Wood.
