On this week’s episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart teased that ABC pulled the latest season of The Bachelorette from its schedule amid an explosive feud between potential star Taylor Frankie Paul and her ex Dakota Mortensen.
Stewart peppered the joke by outlining how “Trump’s America” has become “a fast-paced, chaotic carnival ride.”
“It’s crazy out there,” Stewart said. “TSA lines are longer than your trip, threats in the Middle East increase, planes ram trucks. The only thing that gives me joy is looking forward to this season of ‘The Bachelorette.'” So they got a strong Mormon woman. she seems nice. I hope she finds it–wait a minute, I’m getting a call right now…No! ”
On March 19, a Disney Entertainment Television spokesperson announced the postponement of the season, saying, “In light of today’s newly released video, we have made the decision not to proceed with a new season of The Bachelorette at this time and are focused on supporting our family.”
The decision was made just days before the season 22 premiere on March 22, after a video surfaced showing Paul throwing feces at Mortensen while a child was nearby in the room. Commenting on the leak of the video, Paul’s spokesperson said: “Sad to see the latest in his endless, desperate, destructive campaign for attention to harm Taylor with no regard for the impact on the child. An old video, conveniently taken out of context, was posted on my son’s birthday. Exposing it publicly is a reprehensible attempt to distract from his own actions. Thankfully, the public has seen this behavior before and knows who he is, but sadly many will recognize this pattern of manipulation both from his actions on the show and from their own experiences. ”
On March 16, Paul’s main reality show, The Secret Life of Mormons, temporarily suspended filming following a domestic violence investigation into Paul and Mortensen by the Draper, Utah Police Department.
