Steve Martin and Martin Short publicly paid tribute to Catherine O’Hara during an appearance just hours after her death.
A video circulating via TikTok shows the stars of “Only Murders in the Building” wearing suits on stage at Bass Concert Hall in Austin, Texas, on Friday.
“Catherine O’Hara and I met when she was 18,” Short said.
“And all these years later, she remains one of our greatest, brightest, kindest, sweetest angels,” he added.
Short, 75, and Martin, 80, clinked what appeared to be champagne glasses to an applauding audience.
A portrait of O’Hara was displayed on a screen behind the two actors.
Fans expressed their condolences in the comment thread. One said: “We love and adore her. This was touching,” while another added: “Catherine was a queen.”
A third chimed in: “How lucky she was to have decades of amazing friendships with such amazing people. And conversely, how happy they were to have her in their lives.🥰🥰🥰🥰.”
The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress died Friday at the age of 71 at her home in Los Angeles after a “temporary illness,” her agency CAA announced in a statement to Page Six.
The Los Angeles Fire Department told Page Six they responded to an emergency call at O’Hara’s Brentwood home just before 5 a.m. Friday.
She was taken to hospital in “serious” condition. The cause of death has not been released, but audio from the 911 call said she was having “difficulty breathing.”
Her cause of death has not yet been determined, and sources told the Daily Mail on Saturday that some of her friends were in “complete shock” after her death, as they had been “kept in the dark” about her mysterious illness. She is survived by her husband, Beau Welch, and two sons.
Short and Marin on Friday joined a chorus of celebrities publicly mourning the comedian’s death.
Seth Rogen, who co-starred with O’Hara on The Studio, called her death “a great loss, not just to The Studio, but to the entire world,” adding, “She was a legend.”
Similarly, Macaulay Culkin and other cast members of Home Alone paid tribute to her on Friday, as did Beetlejuice director Tim Burton and Beetlejuice co-star Alec Baldwin, praising her as “one of the greatest.”
O’Hara’s “Schitt’s Creek” castmates also paid tribute to her, with longtime friend Eugene Levy saying in an emotional statement, “I value our working relationship, but most of all, our friendship.”
