Kate Winslet talks about the challenges she faced while making her directorial debut, Goodbye June.
The actress revealed that she only plans to star and produce the film, which was written by her son Joe Anders. Winslet said that when she was given the opportunity to direct the film, she initially thought, “I can’t do three jobs.”
“I know I’m good at multitasking, but this is too much,” Winslet told Digi Spy. “I tried really hard to recast myself (and) I had a really good list of some people who were definitely great in the role.”
“But at that point…well, first of all, Netflix was like, ‘Hmm.’ And second of all, I cast these amazing actors. There’s no reason not to go play with them, because that’s what we do. We play and pretend, and it’s great.”
“Goodbye June,” now showing in select theaters, follows four adult brothers and their father as they navigate a family crisis as their ailing mother’s health deteriorates. Winslet stars as Julia, one of June’s children, while Helen Mirren plays June, the family matriarch.
“It might sound a little gross, but we really had to become a family to make it as real as possible and as relatable as possible,” Winslet added. “You can’t just come on set, do your job, and go home again. It becomes something else. We were lucky that that actually happened in this movie.”
In addition to Winslet and Mirren, “Goodbye June” also stars Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough and Timothy Spall. Additional cast includes Stephen Merchant, Fisayo Akinade, Jeremy Swift, and Raza Jaffrey.
The film will be released on Netflix on December 24th after its theatrical release.
