Matta Cinema Productions and Luang Basbeth Berselita have begun principal photography on the Chinese-Indonesian family drama My Own Last Supper, directed by Ismail Basbeth. His previous feature film, “Sara,” had its world premiere in Busan in 2023.
The feature, which was introduced at Busan’s Asian Content & Film Market in September, began a 15-day shoot on November 27 during the ongoing Jogja Netpac Asian Film Festival and JAFF Market.
The story centers on Enchek, a 76-year-old widow who gathers her children for a last supper, uncovers a hidden memoir of love, loss, and generational wounds, and chooses the sea as the place to reunite with her late wife. The story examines life and the pursuit of identity through the lens of a Chinese-Indonesian family over three key periods: the 1960s, 1970s, and 1998, and addresses unresolved national trauma and historical violence through an intimate personal story.
The production takes a realistic approach with detailed artistic elements, faithfully recreating four different eras: 1960, 1970, 1998, and 2017, from modest businesses to residential interiors. Senior production designer Ong Hari Wahyu will lead the visual design alongside Bandung Film Festival 2025 award-winning art director Edy Wibowo. The creative team also includes Indonesian Film Festival award-winning costume designer Retno Damayanti and makeup artist Faradila.
Nicholas Anderson plays young Ensim, and Jesse Davita plays young Ensim. During JAFF Market 2025, the cast made promotional appearances and handed out red-wrapped tamarind candies, a symbol of love in the movie, to attendees.
The project reunites Basbeth and cinematographer Satria Kurnianto.
Matta Cinema Productions producer Chakaritsa Widyadiprajya is targeting a 2026 release date for the film.
