Bravo, Bravissimo! The Turin Film Festival has announced that Morgan Knibbe’s The Garden of Earthly Delights has won the Best Picture award. The film also received a prize of 20,000 euros. This is the story of Ginto, a teenager who lives in the slums of Manila and dreams of becoming a gangster someday.
The jury, consisting of Ippolita Di Maggio, Lolita Chammer, Vanes Destop, Sergei Loznitsa and Jonah Nazzaro, also recognized “Aida, in which even the dead rose and joined in the song” and awarded her the special jury prize (7,000 euros in prize money). Directed by Esther Ivakic.
Marianne Metivier’s “Ailleurs La Nuit” won the screenplay award, while Sadie Scott and Maria Vrobel won the acting categories for “Fucktoys” and “Her Will Be Done,” respectively.
The jury said Brittany Shine’s She’s won best documentary for its ability to “convey, through powerful images, the daily lives of communities forced to endure the hypocrisy of the word of the law.” They also won “Coexistion, My Ass!” and “Bobò” by Pippo Delbono.
In other news, following the popular Paul Newman retrospective (in which festival attendee Marcello got to see every film), the festival also announced next year’s star, Marilyn Monroe.
“She was more than just an actress, she was a legend, a shining symbol of the collective imagination. This image, chosen for the 44th Turin Film Festival, was taken during her last photo shoot, days before her death. It captures both beauty and fragility, conveying a sense of nostalgia for the future, as if she knew she was destined to live forever, and not now,” said artistic director Giulio Barze.
The retrospective exhibition will be held to coincide with the 100th anniversary of her birth.
Speaking of stars, Vincent Lindon won the fest’s biggest honor, the Stella della Mora Award, on the closing night, while Juliette Binoche, Spike Lee, Antonio Banderas, Jacqueline Bisset and Vanessa Redgrave also competed at the Italian event this year.
The 88-year-old, frail and frail, announced her son’s film The Estate, in which she co-stars with husband Franco Nero, but was quick to correct the host during press.
“You shouldn’t say ‘your son,’ that’s Carlo Nero, the director of this movie,” she deadpans. Bass called Redgrave “one of the best actresses in the world” and praised her outspokenness and drive.
Tiziana Rocca, Head of Global Talent and International Relations, said: “We are very happy that the international stars were so generous to us. They now know about the festival and are telling their colleagues in the West about it too.”
“They kept saying they had to relax and were really grateful to the people who welcomed them into the cinema. The audience was very warm and very large. They were also very enthusiastic about the city itself. It’s great to see so many people coming here for the first time and experiencing this amazing place.”
“American Pie” veteran Jason Biggs showed off his directorial debut, “Untitled Home Invasion Romance,” and a brand new Italian passport. Terry Gilliam was also in attendance, causing quite a stir during a surprise screening of his highly acclaimed film, Marty Supreme, with startled viewers lining up to take secret selfies with him.
“When I was 23 years old and (working) at a film festival, Terry Gilliam allowed me to screen ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ for the first time in Italy. Thank you, Terry,” said I Wonder Pictures’ Andrea Romeo before “Marty Supreme.”
“The slogan of this film is “Dream Big,” and this festival also dreams big.”
