Nick Offerman is ready to spend time with his family.
The 55-year-old actor spoke to PEOPLE about his holiday rules with his wife, actress Megan Mullally, while promoting his Netflix series “Death by Lightning.”
“We just play fast and loose,” he says. “This year I’m going to visit my family in Illinois, and then I’m going to visit Megan (Mullally)’s people in Oklahoma.”
But there was one non-negotiable vacation for the couple, with Offerman saying, “I think the only rule is no work. We know Hollywood will leave us alone until the New Year.”

The actor and Mullally, 67, began dating in 2000 after co-starring in the play “Berlin Circle.” The couple got engaged in London in 2002 and had a surprise wedding at their home in Los Angeles in September 2003.
During an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark in July, Offerman revealed that he asked Mullally the big question many times before they actually got engaged.
“One day Megan and I were walking to an art opening and I was taking something out of my pocket and I accidentally dropped a quarter and I went to get it,” the actor recalled. “And Megan jokingly said, ‘Honey!'”
“We had been together for about a year and we had some conflicts with each other,” he continued. “So I fooled around and pretended I lost the ring I was going to propose to her with. That’s how we bonded.”

Regarding the actual proposal, Offerman said Mulally was “obviously terrified” and did not question whether it was real.
“I was biting my mustache,” he joked.
Offerman’s latest project, Death by Lightning, depicts the inauguration and assassination of James Garfield. The show stars Michael Shannon as Garfield and Offerman as Vice President Chester Arthur.
The Parks and Recreation alum tells PEOPLE that he gained 20 pounds and wore an “incredibly fat suit” for his role in the historical drama.
“It’s not a crazy amount, so I just went into hedonism in a way,” he said of his weight gain.

“Now that I’m a bit of a trimmer, I have a sense of my own posture. When I let myself go like Chester Arthur, I get a more languid demeanor, a little more abandon and kind of flopping myself into the chair,” Offerman continues.
Death by Lightning is now streaming on Netflix.
