Billy Bob Thornton is still in love with his fifth ex-wife, Angelina Jolie.
The “Monster’s Ball” actor recently revealed that he and the “Maleficent” actress have maintained a “close” friendship 22 years after their divorce.
“Angelina and I had a great time together,” he told Rolling Stone in a new interview published Monday. “That was one of the best times of my life. She and I are still very, very close friends.”
Mr Thornton, 70, said it was a “really civilized breakup” between him and Mr Jolie, 50, due to their different lifestyles.
The Landman star admitted the media frenzy surrounding their three-year marriage was “pretty weird.”
“I was more famous when we met,” he explained. “And for some reason, people and the media were very interested in celebrity couples when we got together. It seems like a very popular thing.”
Thornton said he and the Eternals star “didn’t get to go anywhere,” but when they did, everything they said became a “soundbite.”
The one-time Oscar winner then recalled headlines about him and Jolie wearing vials of each other’s blood.
“We each had a little locket, and we literally had a drop of blood in it,” Thornton explained.
“It was a romantic little idea and that was it. But by the time it was over, we were vampires. We were living in dungeons and drinking each other’s blood and things like that,” he recalled.
The “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” actress and Thornton met while filming “Pushing Tin” in 1999 and eloped in Las Vegas the following year.
In 2002, Jolie and the “Bad Santa” actor adopted a son, Maddox, from Cambodia.
However, that same year, the couple filed for divorce and the “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” star was awarded full custody of Maddox, now 24.
Their divorce was finalized in May 2003.
