Universal has released a new clip for their upcoming fantasy epic Wicked: For Good exclusively on Peacock.
The clip also stars Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda), and Jeff Goldblum (Wizard). Other “For Good” cast members include Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Coleman Domingo, and Bowen Yang.
Initial reaction to “Wicked: For Good” in the movie press was enthusiastic in late December, which may point to a successful Oscar season. The original Wicked was nominated for 10 Academy Awards last year, winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
Wicked: For Good is expected to once again be nominated for 10 Oscars this year, with Erivo and Grande nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. If they play the same role, they will become the seventh and eighth actors in Oscar history to be nominated for the same role twice.
During a recent Q&A to promote the film, both stars talked about how the musical shaped them as performers and people. Erivo shared her memories of seeing the musical for the first time when she was 25 years old.
“I had never seen a musical before,” Erivo said. “I saw this movie when I was 25 years old, and I took him out on a date once on his birthday. That’s how I ended up in that place where I felt safe.”
An emotional Grande talked about how playing the role of Glinda helped her return to her love of acting.
“I think the spark of connection with my work was also pretty severed for a while,” Grande said. “I fell in love with creating again and felt really safe and seen for the first time.”
