DC Studios and HBO Max are developing a fictional true crime series set in the DC Universe.
The show, titled “DC Crime,” was supposed to be a true crime documentary series hosted by Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo). The first season will focus on Gorilla Grodd, a DC villain best known for his battle with the Flash.
Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners for the series. DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran will also serve as executive producers, with DC Studios’ Galen Weisman serving as executive producer. The studio is Warner Bros. Television.
HBO Max and DC Studios declined to comment.
Jacenda and Perrault are no strangers to the world of mockumentary series. The duo is famous for creating the critically acclaimed Netflix show “American Vandal,” which mimics the true crime genre. The show ran for two seasons on the streamer and won a Peabody Award in its first season, as well as an Emmy nomination for Best Writing for a Comedy Series. They then created Players, a mockumentary series for Paramount+ set in the world of eSports. They previously fooled the sports world with projects such as a parody of ESPN’s 30 for 30 series based on events from Rocky IV and Angels in the Outfield for CollegeHumor.
Yacenda has also worked on shows such as Hulu’s “Chad Powers” and FX’s “Dave,” while Perrault recently starred in the Shondaland and Netflix series “The Residence.”
Perrault is repped by UTA, Brillstein and Jackoway Austin Tyerman. Yacenda is repped by CAA, 3Arts and Jackoway Austin Tyerman.
Grodd is a member of a society of highly intelligent gorillas who gain supernatural powers and other abilities after coming into contact with an alien spaceship. The character first appeared in the pages of DC Comics in 1959. He has been featured in numerous DC animated series and movies, and has appeared multiple times on The CW’s “Arrowverse” shows, most notably “The Flash.”
Gunn and Safran are building an interconnected film and television universe for DC. On television, HBO will air the drama series “Lantern,” starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. A broadcast start date has not been determined at this time, but it is expected to air in early 2026. Variety also reported that a “V for Vendetta” TV series is currently in production.
