Alan Ritchson may be re-enlisting in the military.
Netflix is working on a sequel to the sci-fi, military-themed action movie “War Machine,” which is the streamer’s biggest ratings driver. Ritchson played a sergeant who comes face-to-face with a terrifying supernatural killing machine during a mock mission.
Patrick Hughes, who directed “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” and “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” will return to direct the sequel. Hughes also co-wrote the screenplay with James Beaufort and will produce with Todd Lieberman through Hidden Pictures, Rich Cooke of Range Media Partners, and Patrick Hughes’ producing partner Greg McLean through Huge Films. Alex Young will also serve as a producer for Hidden Pictures. Valerie Brace Sharp will serve as executive producer.
It’s unclear what the sequel’s story will be, but War Machine ends with an open ending. Ritchson is best known for his performance in the Amazon Prime Video action-thriller series “Reacher” and for playing Hank Hall/Hawk in the DC Universe and HBO Max series “Titans.” There was no word on whether Ritchson would return. The first film’s ensemble includes Dennis Quaid, Stephen James, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales.
Since its release on Netflix on March 26, “War Machine” has garnered 139 million views, making it one of the streaming service’s top 10 most popular original movies of all time. The film currently sits at number 10, but could reach number 9 as the streamer continues to count views until the 91-day measurement mark. In reviews, some critics praised the film’s escapism and action, while others slammed it as formulaic.
TheWrap first reported the news about a possible “War Machine” sequel.
