The Devil Wears Prada 2 director David Frankel says he would have liked to see Adrian Grenier reprise his role as Andy Sachs’ (Anne Hathaway) girlfriend Nate in the previous film.
Frankel told Entertainment Weekly that he tried to “sneak” Grenier into a cameo role. But in the end, “the production schedule was too slow to make it happen.”
In March, Grenier told Page Six, “I’m disappointed that I wasn’t approached for a sequel, but I also understand that there’s been some backlash to the character of Nate, so maybe that has something to do with it. But I think it just leaves room for a spinoff.” He added: “We’re all fans of this movie, whether we’re in it or not.”
Grenier also appeared in a Starbucks commercial, teasing his role as Nate, to which Frankel commented, “I’m thrilled he[Grenier]did a Starbucks commercial. He was really funny and very assertive. I love his humility and comedy!”
Frankel did not say what kind of plot Grenier might develop in the sequel. The original version of The Devil Wears Prada was released in 2006 and starred Hathaway, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, who all reprized their roles in the sequel.
Nate and Andy’s relationship is debated among fans who find Nate’s actions in the film selfish and are angry at Andy, who is starting a career at Runway Magazine. The movie ends with their relationship status open to interpretation since they broke up earlier in the movie.
The Devil Wears Prada 2, which premieres on May 1st, follows Andy as he returns to Runway Magazine 20 years after quitting his job as Miranda’s personal assistant. As the publication faces a changing media landscape, Andy and Miranda team up with Emily, also a former assistant and now the head of a luxury brand, to buy an ad that will save Runway from ruin.
