Taylor Swift’s big week with ‘Toy Story’, Spielberg and the Knicks

What do Buzz Lightyear, Steven Spielberg, and the New York Knicks have in common? The answer is Taylor Swift.

The pop star was all over the place this week. On Monday, he made a surprise appearance at the Toy Story 5 premiere, performing his new song “I Knew It, I Knew You” and duetting with Randy Newman himself on “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” On Wednesday, she was the night’s celebrity guest at Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks pulled off the biggest upset in NBA Finals history. And on Thursday, the 36-year-old became the youngest artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The person who presented her with the award was none other than Steven Spielberg, who compared her to John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

If three times is the charm, fans already know what this means. The burst of activity marks a shift from Swift’s more intentional release strategy over the past 18 months, following the record-breaking Elas Tour, which was the only tour in history to gross $2 billion. From there, how does she top her historic 149-day record, which is essentially an Avengers: Endgame -like culmination of the past two decades of her career?

Instead of pulling Marvel to flood the market with more content, Swift took a step back. Tabloids reported this as a sort of “hibernation” with her boyfriend and now fiancé, Travis Kelsey, and every public appearance since has left her rabid fans in a frenzy, looking for clues about her next big move.

But even Harvard Business Review editor Kevin Evers, who literally wrote a book about how Swift’s keen business instincts made her a superstar (aptly titled “There’s Nothing Like It: The Strategic Genius of Taylor Swift”), disagrees with the idea that some on the internet think of her as a “megalomaniac” planner.

“A lot of people think all of her actions are an attempt to get attention, but I don’t think going to a Knicks game is completely strategic,” he told Variety. “I think she’s just living her life.”

When news broke that Swift had recorded a single for Toy Story 5, headlines immediately turned to Oscar speculation, with some framing the partnership with Disney as a strategic move toward winning her first Academy Award. While Swift wouldn’t have turned down the chance to take the stage at the Dolby Theater and add that little golden silhouette to her long list of accomplishments, Evers suggests that her decision to write “I Knew It, I Knew You” was far less calculated.

“Partnering with Toy Story is a great move for her, but it also comes from a place of genuine excitement,” Evers explains. “She’s a huge Toy Story fan, and a lot of what Taylor does is personal. She just does what she really wants to do, and the strategy follows.”

“I Knew It, I Knew You,” which is in rotation on radio stations in nearly every country, proved that when the music is right, fans of the genre will embrace Swift, a former teenage country phenom who pivoted to pop to pursue a global career, once again. Ahead of its 20th anniversary in October, all the stars are united in a big push to re-promote Taylor Swift, Swift’s self-titled debut and most country-heavy album yet. Swift had previously said she completed Taylor’s version of the album before buying back the masters, but she was holding it off until the right time.

“The Toy Story song would be a great bridge for her to get back into country music. I think she’ll definitely go back to country,” Evers says. “She and her team have clearly made strides there. In the coming months, we’re going to see Taylor Swift trying to get back into country music in earnest.”

A return to country could be the next step in a broader return to Swift’s roots, as she finally regains control of her catalog. During her 21-minute acceptance speech at the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony, she appeared at her most emotional as she reflected on the leap that first took her to stardom.

“It was easy to choose songwriting over everything else in life, but it couldn’t have been easy for my parents and older brother to pick up their entire family and move from Pennsylvania to Nashville to hone their craft in the songwriting capital of the world,” Swift said. “I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me. I’m here tonight because of you.”

If Swift’s 13th album leans more toward country, it could mark a full-circle moment for the Nashville roots that first shaped her as a songwriter. There will also be a moment when country music makes a mainstream comeback, driven primarily by Gen Z and Millennials.

“Country is in a completely different place than it was when she moved into pop,” Evers says. “It’s more global now. Younger, more open. Returning to her debut album allows her to honor her roots while also reaching a new generation of country fans who appreciate exactly what Taylor has always done best: songwriting and storytelling.”

When Swift posed with Sombre on the red carpet and reacted to being called the Knicks’ lucky charm, her fellow songwriters embraced the idea that she was returning to her roots.

“Country has always been about songwriting. It’s always been a genre of music that’s based on the songwriter first, not the clothes or the hairstyle,” Gavin DeGraw told Variety on the carpet. “Country has never forgotten its key ingredients, and I think Taylor knows that.”

Swift’s intimacy and vulnerability are ultimately what connect her to her fans. As Evers argues, “It’s her business acumen that underpins her success, but that success wouldn’t have been possible if she hadn’t been a singer-songwriter.”

That distinction is still important to veterans like Goo Goo Dolls frontman Johnny Resnik, who says he has “a lot of respect” for up-and-coming artists who write their own songs.

“Do you know what the world needs? It’s true,” Rzeznik says. “We’ve been through a huge period of escapism in music, and I get that, but it’s time to say something. I saw all the AI stuff going on and I was like, ‘Oh no, get me out of the studio!'” Every time the wind shifts, I just continue to be myself. Just be yourself. ”

If this week has suggested anything, it’s that Swift’s next chapter may not be a matter of size but of the quality of the author. With her catalog back under her control and Spielberg officially on board, perhaps her long-awaited feature directorial debut is closer than ever.

“I love making movies, but I don’t think I’ll ever fill a stadium with multigenerational fans who want to recite the lines from ‘Indiana Jones,'” Spielberg said on stage at the Songwriters Hall of Fame. “So, Taylor, thank you for your gift of storytelling and for insisting on being an authentic voice in a world where the line between real and fake is increasingly blurred. You are our disco ball.”
