Season 5 writers’ room opens, ‘Tulsa King’ eyes shift to New York

“Tulsa King” could be heading for a fifth season.

Season 4 of Sylvester Stallone’s Paramount Plus drama recently wrapped production, and the writers’ room for season 5 is open, Variety has learned from sources. However, while the show has been mostly filmed in Atlanta throughout its run, there are plans to move production to New York for next season.

Sources said the decision was made based on both budget and storyline considerations. New York State has increased its film tax incentives twice in the past three years under Governor Kathy Hochul. That number now stands at $800 million a year, as New York seeks to match expanded incentives in New Jersey and other states. New York also currently offers a 30% rebate to match Georgia’s credit, and offers up to a 40% rebate for businesses investing at least $100 million. The state also expanded coverage for expenses above the limit.

Story-wise, Stallone’s character, Dwight “The General” Manfredi, is originally from New York before being banished to the titular Oklahoma City by his mafia cronies. We don’t yet know what will happen in Season 4, but Dwight will eventually return to his hometown and face his nemesis and more.

However, it should be noted that the season 5 pickup has not been officially announced yet. But given the show’s popularity, it’s very possible.

Approximately 250 people work on the show’s staff in Atlanta, many of whom have been with the show since its inception. The show has had some behind-the-scenes issues in the past, including the layoffs of more than 20 staff entering season 4 under the direction of 101 Studio executive Scott Stone, who replaced the actual showrunner as the series’ de facto showrunner.

“Tulsa King” Season 3 aired from September to November 2025. Season 4 was announced ahead of that season’s premiere. As of this article’s publication, no premiere date has been set for Season 4.

It’s one of several Taylor Sheridan series currently streaming on Paramount+, along with shows like “The Landman,” “The Lioness,” “Madison,” “Dutton Ranch” and “The Mayor of Kingstown.”

In addition to Stallone, the season 3 cast also includes Martin Starr, J Will, Annabella Sciorra, Neal McDonough, Robert Patrick, Beau Knapp, Bella Heathcote, Chris Caldovino, McKenna Quigley Harrington, Mike “Cash Flow” Walden, Kevin Pollack, Vincent Piazza, Frank Grillo, Michael Beach, James Russo, Garrett Hedlund, and Dana Delaney.

Samuel L. Jackson also appeared in several episodes of Season 3 as Russell Lee Washington, Jr. The character was introduced as a famous hitman who was in prison with Dwight. He is now set to lead his own spin-off series, The Frisco King.

Tulsa King is executive produced by Sheridan, Stallone, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Jim McKay, Sheri Elwood, Ildy Modrovich and Keith Cox. Terrence Winter served as head writer and executive producer on season four. The show is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution. Produced by Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios.
