ABC has renewed both the revival of “Scrubs” and the multi-cam comedy “Shifting Gears,” Variety reported.
This is the second season of the revival and the show’s 11th season overall. “Shifting Gears” is scheduled to return for a third season after airing its second season from October 2025 to February 2026.
Additionally, Variety has learned that a comedy pilot, “Do You Want Kids?”, is in production. Broadcasting stations are not making progress. The pilot will be co-produced by Rachel Bloom and Dan Gregor, with Bloom also set to star. Bloom and Rory Scovell played a couple who had children in one world and were childless in another, and the show emphasized how that one decision affected their lives.
“Scrubs” returns to ABC for the first time in 16 years, with original stars Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke and Donald Faison all returning. Additionally, original stars John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes, Christa Miller, Neil Flynn, Phil Lewis, and Robert Maschio all reprized or guest-starred.
According to Disney, the first episode reached 11 million viewers across all platforms in its first 35 days of availability.
Shifting Gears, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, tells the story of Matt (Allen), a classic car shop owner whose life changes when he moves his wayward daughter Riley (Dennings) and her two children into his home. The cast also includes Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis.
Bill Lawrence created the original “Scrubs” and served as executive producer through his Doozer Productions with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. In addition to starring, Braff, Faison and Chalke will also serve as executive producers. Aseem Batra will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Randall Winston also serving as executive producer. TV number 20 is the studio.
Allen is an executive producer on “Shifting Gears” along with Michelle Nader, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Paskin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daly and John Amodeo. Dennings is a producer. Produced by 20th Television.
With these renewals, ABC will retain most of its current primetime scripted lineup for the 2026-2027 broadcast season. The only show awaiting news of its fate is the midseason entry “RJ Decker,” starring Scott Speedman. The network is also currently finalizing a pilot for a spin-off of “The Rookie” called “The Rookie North.”
