Amazon Prime Video has set a release date for the next “The Rings of Power.”
The third season of the Lord of the Rings prequel series will debut on November 11th. The news comes ahead of Amazon’s presentation to advertisers at Upfront in New York City, where the company also released a new image of Sauron (Charlie Vickers) wearing a crown.
“The Rings of Power” is set in the second era of Middle-earth’s history, thousands of years before the original books and movies. According to the official description, Season 3 picks up several years after the events of Season 2, “at the height of the war between the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to create the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will, and ultimately rule all of Middle-earth.”
Season 1 of “Rings of Power” remains the biggest TV launch of all time, and season 2 is in the top five most-watched rerun series of all time, according to Amazon. (Both statistics are measured in viewership over a 91-day period.) Amazon also says the series has attracted more than 185 million viewers overall and is one of its largest contributors to new subscriptions for Prime Video.
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will serve as showrunners on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power and executive produce alongside Lindsay Webber, Justin Doble, Kate Hazell and director Charlotte Brandstrom. Matthew Penley-Davie is the producer, with Allie O’Leary, Tim Keene and Andrew Lee serving as co-producers. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
“From its inception, this series has embodied the scale, ambition and cinematic storytelling that characterize Prime Video’s largest global series,” Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon, said in a statement. “The extraordinary response from millions of fans around the world has made it clear that this journey through Middle-earth continues to resonate, and its momentum will only continue to grow for Season 3.”
