Riders, get ready: The long-conceived TV adaptation of “Force Wings” is set to become a series on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Based on author Rebecca Jarosz’s best-selling romance book series, The Empyrean, Fourth Wing is set in the cruel world of Basgias Military Academy. There, there’s only one rule. Either graduate or die. 20-year-old Violet Solengair is expected to live a quiet life, but when her mother, a military general, orders her to join hundreds of candidates aiming to become Navarre’s elite Dragon Riders, she takes a completely different path.
Mr. Jarosz’s “The Empyrean” series began with the release of the New York Times bestseller “Fourth Wing” in May 2023, followed by the sequel “Iron Flame” in November 2023 and the third book “Onyx Storm” in January 2025. The titles and release dates of the planned fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced.
“Forth Wing” executive producer Michael B. Jordan announced the series pickup at the end of Amazon’s upfront presentation for TV advertisers on Monday at the Beacon Theater.
Jordan didn’t have much to say yet, only that after acquiring the rights and developing the project at Amazon MGM Studios, his Outlier Society production company and studio needed to find the right team to bring Yaros’s Romantacy book series to television. In addition to Yaross himself, that group also includes HBO’s “Westworld” co-creator Lisa Joy (who is an executive producer and directed the first episode of “The Fourth Wing”) and showrunner Meredith Averill (who co-created Netflix’s “Locke & Key”).
Other executive producers include Outlier President Elizabeth Raposo and Quilter Films’ Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham. Liz Pelletier and Sheryl Clark serve as executive producers for Premeditated Productions, a sister company of “Fourth Wing” publisher Entangled Publishing. Stefano Agosto, Outlier Society’s executive vice president of television, will serve as co-executive producer.
The “Forth Wing” TV series, which first began development in October 2023, was on hold until last September, when Averill joined as showrunner following the departure of Moira Walley-Beckett, who had been signed on as the project’s original showrunner in the summer of 2024.
“I am thrilled to be working with this dedicated and experienced team and appreciate their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” said Jarosz.
“Violet’s journey in the Fourth Wing has become a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an incredibly passionate fan base around its world, characters and emotional relationships,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yaross’ incredible series is one of the most anticipated film adaptations in the world, and Meredith and our valued partners at Quilter, Outlier and Premeditated are bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about this story.
Yaros is represented by Louise Fury of The Fury Agency, Matthew N. Sugarman of Weintraub Tobin, and Shivani Doraiswami of Untitled Entertainment.
