Everything is set for the long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster movie “Minecraft,” now officially titled “A Minecraft Movie Squared.”
The Minecraft Movie, a PG adventure from Warner Bros. and Legendary headlined by Jack Black and Jason Momoa, dominated the spring 2025 box office. The film, about a group of misfits who are drawn through a portal into a three-dimensional world and guided by Steve, a master craftsman played by Black, had a record opening domestic gross of $163 million, and ultimately grossed $960 million worldwide. Oscar nominees Daniel Brooks, Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge also starred in the film, which is based on the hugely popular video game.
A sequel is currently in production, with Jared Hess returning to direct and Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst joining the cast. Hess also co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Galletta. “A Minecraft Movie Squared” is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 23, 2027.
Berry will return for an unreleased part, while Dunst will play Alex, the female equivalent of Minecraft’s Steve. Her role was revealed in a behind-the-scenes video included in a TwitchCon presentation that was streamed live on Saturday morning.
Warner Bros. and Legendary announced the title Saturday to launch a contest for creators to build something within the “Minecraft” video game that could potentially appear in the movie or in the end credits. Challenge winners will also be able to attend a private screening of the sequel with their friends. For more information about the contest, please visit the Minecraft website.
Producers for the Minecraft sequel include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Momoa, and the late Jill Messick. Executive producers are Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg, and Jonathan Speights.
