Michael Jackson: The Verdict, a new three-part Netflix series about the explosive 2005 Michael Jackson trial, will premiere on June 3.
The documentary series covers the pop icon’s 2003 child sexual abuse accusations, the resulting trial, and the media storm that revolved around the court proceedings. This document features key players in the courtroom, including jurors, witnesses, accusers, and defense attorneys. The series examines the case against Jackson from both the prosecution and defense sides. Although Jackson was acquitted of all charges, interest in the iconic singer and his legal battles has continued long after his death in 2009.
The documentary is directed by Nick Green and executive produced by Fiona Stoughton. The filmmakers told Netflix’s Tudum that they “felt it was the right time to revisit the trial and its lingering questions,” and “presented the facts as they unfolded in court, approaching them as a historical account.”
“It’s been 20 years since Michael Jackson was acquitted, but the controversy continues,” the filmmakers told Tudum. “With cameras not allowed in the courtroom, the public’s view of the facts at the time was filtered by commentators and presented in fragments. The time has come for a forensic review of the entire trial.”
“Anyone interested in the story of Michael Jackson will find this documentary provides a window into events that have been largely private, giving them an opportunity to feel closer to what happened.”
The filmmakers also interviewed members of the media who were covering the trial. “The aim was to bring the audience into the scene of the incident and speak only to the witnesses involved in the incident,” the filmmakers said.
Michael Jackson: The Verdict is created by showrunner David Herman, who also serves as executive producer alongside Stoughton and James Goldston. This series is produced by Candle True Stories.
