Disney’s live-action movie “Moana” topped the Korean box office during the weekend of July 10th to 12th.
According to data from KOBIS, a tracking service run by the Korea Film Council, the film earned $3 million from 403,931 admissions over three days, securing a 36.53% share of the weekend market. Since its wide release on July 8, the film has grossed $3.7 million with a total attendance of 511,471.
Local suspense thriller “The Eyes” held on to second place, collecting $1.8 million from 257,816 admissions. The remake of the Spanish feature film “Julia’s Eyes,” directed by Yeom Ji-ho and starring Shin Min-ah and Kim Nam-hee, had a total of 1,277,263 viewers and a total box office revenue of $8.7 million.
“Toy Story 5” moved into third place, collecting $1.7 million from 238,520 attendees, bringing its box office revenue in South Korea to $17.6 million from a total of 2,580,319 tickets since its premiere in mid-June.
The faith-based animated musical “David” debuted in fourth place with $390,901 from 57,675 admissions over three days. Including previews, the film grossed $493,014 in early local cams from 75,469 viewers.
The long-running action-horror blockbuster “Colony” came in at No. 5, earning $275,526 from 37,008 admissions in the weekend slot. The viral collective mind thriller, directed by Yeon Sang-ho and starring Jeon Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Ji Chang-wook, has attracted a total of 5,914,322 viewers and grossed $41.4 million since its release on May 21st.
“Marty Supreme” came in at No. 6 on the chart, adding $110,163 for a total of $723,165, while 1990s retro music comedy “Wild Thing” came in at No. 7, collecting $72,357 for a total of $8.5 million.
The Japanese adventure anime “Doraemon the Movie: New Nobita and the Undersea Castle” came in eighth place with $82,132, and the highest price was $360,752.
Plus M Entertainment’s highly anticipated epic sci-fi thriller “Hope” came in at No. 9, earning $101,311 from 10,146 preview admissions ahead of its upcoming wide release. Directed by Na Hong-jin and featuring an international star cast including Hwang Jeong-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-young, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, the film depicts a rural community facing the threat of extraterrestrial life and has a preliminary gross of $106,628.
Rounding out the bottom of the top 10 was “Backrooms,” which earned $65,575 over three days and lifted its lifetime total to $8.5 million from 1,209,069 admissions.
The overall market total for the weekend was $8.2 million, up from last week’s $7.3 million.
