Ty Blue, the Tony Award-winning director and co-creator of “Titanic,” has joined the creative team for “The Pyramid: An Authorized Dance Moms Musical,” a new parody written by longtime “Dance Moms” fans James Stryska, Isabel Grace, Erica Molfet, and Molly Russo.
This original musical is directed by lead producer Logan Clark, who has over 15 years of experience in television, music, live entertainment and theatrical production.
Clark was a member of the original “Dance Moms” production team during the series’ early years. The musical’s Kickstarter campaign launched on Monday to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the Lifetime series’ premiere.
Blue will advise and lead the writing team in the ongoing workshop process, drawing on his development expertise in both musical comedy and commercial theater.
“The Pyramid” was originally the brainchild of Stryska and Grace, who posted a simple idea online: “I think Dance Moms should be a musical.” The video quickly exploded, garnering over 5.6 million views and enthusiastic responses from fans, theater artists, and members of the “Dance Moms” community itself.
“Our goal has always been to bring the experience of watching episodes with friends to a whole new medium,” Stryska, Grace, Molfetto and Russo said in a statement Monday. “We’ve built an entirely new story for the stage, while packing the show with moments that you swear came straight from TV.”
Clark’s company, Casting Collective, is spearheading a nationwide search for singers, dancers and performers to develop the production.
The show is being developed by Daisy Theatricals, a New York-based development collective founded by Randall and Alison Jane Simmons.
“It’s incredibly special to see four writers take something they love so dearly and build a whole new world of theater out of their shared experiences,” Clark said. “James, Isabel, Erica and Molly understand this audience because they are this audience. My job is to protect that vision, build a great team around them, and help them build ‘The Pyramid’ into the biggest, boldest and most entertaining production.”
