The new “Stargate” TV series has been canceled by Amazon, Variety exclusively reported.
The show was first announced for a series order in November 2025. The show received praise from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Martin Gero, who earlier in his career wrote Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis.
Amazon executives were worried that Gero’s take on the series wouldn’t have broad appeal beyond the series’ already loyal fan base, according to people familiar with the situation.
It was first reported in 2022 that Amazon was considering developing new projects in the Stargate universe, following Amazon’s acquisition of Stargate producer MGM Studios. Although Gero’s series will not continue, Amazon is still looking for new ways to push the series further.
Gero remains under an overall agreement with Amazon MGM Studios and will continue to develop projects.
Plot details regarding Gero’s take on the show have not been announced so far. In addition to Gero, executive producers include Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harrold and Tori Tunnell, as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote the original film, which Emmerich directed. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders of the Stargate universe, served as consulting producers.
“Stargate” was originally released as a 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The film was followed by the hit series Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. The spin-off Stargate Atlantis then aired for five more seasons from 2004 to 2008.
It has also released two direct-to-video Stargate movies and three TV shows, the most recent being 2018’s Stargate Origins.
