Madonna hinted at a feud with her daughter Lourdes “Laura” Leon, which she reportedly healed through music.
“It’s a song that I wrote with my daughter Laura. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to mend our relationship,” she cryptically told Interview Magazine about her eldest son in a new feature published on Monday.
“That was a really important moment and solidified the idea that it was time to make this record.”
The pop icon and her daughter co-wrote a song titled “Good for the Soul” on her 15th studio album, Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II.
Madonna, 67, told the outlet that the new song was inspired by a lot of “family trauma” going on at the time.
“I had a lot going on in my life personally. My brother was very, very ill, and my stepmother, with whom I had a very traumatic relationship throughout my childhood, had just passed away,” she recalled.
Madonna’s brother Christopher Ciccone passed away in October 2024 after a long battle with cancer, just weeks after his stepmother’s death.
“For me, it’s hard to write songs about nothing,” Madonna continued. “Stories have to be told, so I wrote a lot about family trauma. Then I started making dance music.”
Grammy Award winner Lourdes, who she shares with ex Carlos Leon, previously opened up about her strained relationship with her mother.
The 29-year-old told Interview Magazine in 2021, “My mom is such a control freak and has controlled me all my life. As soon as I graduated high school, I had to be completely independent from her.”
The model also revealed that she paid for her own college tuition as a way to build independence.
“My family has no benefits,” she claimed. “Obviously, I grew up with extreme privilege, there’s no denying that.”
Despite her ups and downs, Lourdes never failed to recognize how “influential and amazing” her mother was during her time and how “she empowered other women and was always ahead of her time.”
“I didn’t fully understand it until I realized the importance of empowerment and what it meant to be a woman,” Lourdes admitted.
“She’s probably the hardest worker I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit that. I inherited her control issues, but not her work ethic.”
In addition to Lourdes, Madonna is also the mother of four adopted children, David Banda and Marcy James, both 20, with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, and son Rocco Ritchie, 25, with 13-year-old twins Estelle and Stella Ciccone.
