Dio Ride, written and directed by Giovanni Veronesi, concludes the 83rd edition of Venice International Airport. The film festival will be held from September 2nd to 12th. The film will be screened in the out-of-competition section.
“Dio Ride” stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Silvio Orlando, Alma Noce, Francesco Ghegi, Maurizio Lombardi, Paolo Rossi and Carlo Cecchi. The film, whose English title is “God Laughs,” is about a monk in 17th-century Tuscany who talks about God while making people laugh. However, his frivolous attitude annoys the church.
Alberto Barbera, the festival’s director, said: “Thanks to Giovanni Veronesi and his wonderful cast, we are able to close on a high note. Thanks to them, we are able to successfully combine traditionally serious themes with irony and lightness. This is a tone that belongs to the best tradition of Italian cinema and has been ignored for far too long.”
The film, set in the mid-1600s and loosely based on a true story, “resonates strongly today through a story centered on freedom, the power of truth, and the relationship between people and power, with its shadows and contradictions,” the festival said. “Frate Leopold changes the lives of those he meets with his deep humanity.”
The screenplay was written by Veronesi, Nicola Baldoni, Gianluca Bernardini, and Nicola DeOrsola, with collaborations by Paolo Portone and Jean-Jacques Lunga.
“Dio Ride” is produced by Indiana Productions, Piper Films and Ogi Films in association with Netflix. Produced by Fabrizio Donvito, Benedetto Habib, Marco Cohen, and Daniel Campos Pavoncelli for Indiana Productions. A Piperfilm production by Massimiliano Orfei, Luisa Borella and Davide Novelli.
“Dio Ride” will be released in Italian theaters on October 29th and will be distributed by Piper Film. Piperplay will be in charge of overseas sales.
