Emily Blunt has been criticized on social media for telling fans to quit their jobs and settle for “not making money”.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 actress made the remarks in a YouTube interview with Betches, where she was asked if she had any advice for “women who are hating their jobs right now.”
“Don’t…no,” she whispered.
Brandt then laughed and added, “Find what you really want to do.”
“Even if you don’t have an income, if you love what you do, you can be happy,” the 43-year-old added.
Fans criticized Blunt’s “terrible career advice on social media,” pointing out how easy it is for the actress, who is worth an estimated $80 million, to tell people to “get a job that pays less.”
“That’s something only (over)privileged people can say,” one fan wrote in a YouTube comment.
The same fan called Blunt “entitled.”
At X, someone tweeted, “Emily Blunt should know better than to be so tone-deaf. Can these rich celebrities who make millions stop lecturing the rest of us about how money doesn’t matter? It’s an insult.”
Another fan said: “This is really terrible advice in the current job market but this is how delusional I want to be to distance myself from reality.”
Another X user confessed that the Oscar nominee’s “unpleasant” advice made him “think less of her”.
Another criticized Mr. Blunt’s “privileged views,” pointing out that “not everyone can afford to get the job they want and give up their current job even if it sucks.”
Page Six has reached out to Blunt’s representatives for comment.
Blunt is joining Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and others on the press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
In the sequel, she plays Emily Charlton, who goes from being Miranda Priestly’s (Streep) assistant to a senior executive at Dior.
In a recent interview with Today, Blunt said she loves playing her “free” characters.
“I don’t know if she’s gotten softer over time,” she said. “There’s got to be some kind of doom for all of them. But I love playing her.”
Blunt continued, “Obviously I think she’s a total lunatic. But I think she’s so delicious and fun. Now that she has power, I think she’s even crazier.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released in theaters on Friday.
