India’s Reliance Animation has secured character intellectual property rights to develop an animated series based on the life of soccer legend Diego Maradona.

The Mumbai-based studio, a division of Reliance Entertainment, will produce a scripted series chronicling Maradona’s journey from his early years to international stardom on streaming and television platforms. The project is currently in development, with details about the creative team, distribution partners, and release schedule to be announced in the future.

The deal was brokered in partnership with SATTVICA SA, Maradona’s intellectual property rights holder based in Argentina, and brokered through Bridge Marketing Group, Inc. This series explores key moments in Maradona’s career, personal struggles, and cultural influence on and off the pitch.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring Diego Maradona’s extraordinary story to a new generation through animation,” said Shivashish Sarkar, CEO of Reliance Entertainment. “We believe his journey of resilience, passion and achievement transcends sports and will inspire audiences around the world.”

Reliance Animation CEO Tejonidhi Bhandare said the project was a landmark moment for the studio. “Our team is committed to capturing the spirit, struggles and triumphs of Maradona’s life in a way that resonates with viewers across ages and cultures,” Bander said.

Rita Maradona, President of SATTVICA SA, added: “We, the sisters of Diego, are very happy and proud of this new project with a prestigious company like Reliance. Through this project, we will strive to reach an audience of children and make our brothers known to all children around the world.”

Samuel Nieto, CEO of Bridge Marketing Group, the worldwide licensing agency for the Diego Maradona brand, added that the partnership will “help spread the legacy of the great Diego Maradona into the hearts of future generations of young athletes around the world. It will be a beautiful story told through the magic of animation.”

The news was announced on the sidelines of WAVES Film Bazaar, the market component of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

Reliance Animation is part of the Entertainment division of Reliance Group, with businesses across production, digital platforms, games and music.
