Bong Joon-ho has acquired an incredible talent to lend his voice to his first animated film, Ally.
Ayo Edebiri, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, Alex Jayne Go, Rachel House and Werner Herzog star in the film, which was recently acquired by Neon for North America and will reunite them with the director since Parasite. CJ ENM, Penture Invest and Pathé have partnered to co-finance and distribute.
Directed by Bong, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jason Yu, the film, which has been in development since 2019, follows Ally, a curious and endearing little squid living in the uncharted depths of the South Pacific. She dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary. However, her peaceful world is suddenly put in jeopardy when a mysterious plane sinks into the ocean. Allie, along with her loyal but unlikely companions, is forced on an extraordinary journey that will take her to the surface.
Seo Woo-shik will produce the film, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027 and released in the second half of the same year.
Neon plans to release the film in North American theaters. Pathé will be responsible for distribution in France, Benelux, Switzerland and West Africa, while CJ and Pencher will be responsible for distribution in South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia. Pathé will be in charge of international sales excluding Japan and China, and CJ and Pentua will be in charge of sales.
