Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige surprised San Diego Comic-Con attendees with an exclusive sneak peek of Avengers: Doomsday, which was shown to lucky fans inside the convention center’s massive Hall H.
The trailer begins with Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) sitting on a throne and Sue Storm (aka Invisible Woman), played by Vanessa Kirby, explaining how broken she is as a person. “Victor was always the smartest guy in the room. He was different before,” she says melancholy. It’s clear that she and the rest of the Fantastic Four, especially Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, already know Doom and have a complicated past with him. “Everything he loved was taken away from him,” she explains.
The trailer is peppered with quick shots of the cast, including Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Letitia Wright), Shang-Chi (Sim Liu), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Cyclops (James Marsden), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Gambit (Channing Tatum), and more. There’s a shot of a destroyed New York City reduced to rubble, and Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, asks if Victor is responsible for the massacre.
Doom is heard saying, “You’ve all been living stolen lives.” Thor confronts Doom, but the villain grabs his magic hammer and easily throws it away. Doom uses his magical powers to throw Thor away and raise an army of Sentinel robots, the iconic androids from the X-Men movies, from the ground.
MCU fans will have to wait until December 18th to see Avengers: Doomsday for themselves, but it’s expected to be a big team-up of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and even more Marvel stars.
The countdown to “Doomsday” began last December when Marvel released four teaser trailers to begin building fan excitement for the hotly anticipated film. Features include the return of Chris Evans as Captain America (who also has a baby), the love story between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and his daughter, the encounter between the Fantastic Four, Black Panther and the Wakandans, and the official MCU debut of Fox’s previous X-Men teams.
The cast of “Doomsday” stars Downey Jr. as the villainous Doctor Doom, and also includes “Avengers” stars such as Evans, Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Simu Liu. The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts teams, consisting of Pascal, Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Louis Pullman, will also team up with the original stars.
Fox’s “X-Men” cast members will also join the MCU in “Doomsday.” Returning stars include Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Channing Tatum.
