After finishing his career in “Andor”, Diego Luna moves from one part of the Disney empire to another.
The Star Wars actor will join Teagan Croft (Titans), Milo Manheim (Zombies) and Kathryn Hahn (The Studio) in the studio’s live-action version of Rapunzel. For those who don’t know about the 2010 animated film of the same name, it’s a retelling of the story of Rapunzel, who famously “let her hair down” from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The original film grossed more than $591 million worldwide and spawned a series on Disney Channel. Luna will appear in an entirely new role created for the film, but it’s entirely possible that his character will favor a dramatic hairstyle.
Michael Gracey, who directed the hit musical film The Greatest Showman, will direct the film from a script by Jennifer Katin Robinson (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Michael Montemayor (Everyone I Love is Dead). Kristin Barr is in charge of producing the bar! Jessica Virtue, vice president of production and production, is overseeing the Disney live-action project. Filming is scheduled to begin in June this year in Spain. The release date has not yet been announced.
Luna is an acclaimed actor, director, and producer known for his roles in I Tu Mama También, La Machina, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His next film, Ashes, which he directed and co-wrote, is based on the acclaimed Spanish-language novel. It is scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2026. Luna will also star in Netflix’s upcoming “Mexico 86,” which tells the true story of Martin de la Torre, the government official who negotiated Mexico hosting the 1986 World Cup. He also recently finished production on the movie “Eleven Days,” in which he stars. Luna co-founded the production company La Corriente del Golfo with Gael García Bernal.
Luna is repped by WME and ID PR. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Luna’s casting.
