Gigi Hadid revealed in the new Vogue Magazine cover story that he played the lead role of Rapunzel in Disney’s live-action “Tangled” remake before the project was put on hold indefinitely. The supermodel has been looking at a more robust pivot for acting after a variety of voice roles and cameos over the years in films such as Ocean’s 8. She took singing lessons to prepare for Rapunzel’s audition.
“What will we do with this job now? Hadid asked Cover co-star and longtime friend Kendall Jenner before expressing his satisfaction with the ‘intertwined’ audition process.
“I was really proud of my scene. I sang…I knew they were going with the real singers, but I’ll show you my audition scene later,” Hadid added to Jenner.
In December 2024, news broke that Disney had spoken by “The Greatest Man” film director Michael Gracey to develop a live-action “Tangled” filmmaker Michael Gracey with filmmakers of “The Greatest Showman” and “Better Man” and direct the film from the script, saying Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (I know what you did last summer recently). No casting was announced.
The variety, reported in April, was in the aftermath of the live-action Snow White film, which is shattering at the box office, with the remake in an indefinite hold. The remake, which Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot discovered, didn’t even go beyond $90 million at the domestic box office. This summer, Disney has had a much better success with the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake.
“Tangled” tells the story of Rapunzel, a princess (voiced by Mandy Moore) who was eventually rescued from her secluded tower by an outlaw named Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi). The well-reviewed film opened 14 at Thanksgiving in 2010, generating $592 million at the global box office. The film produced the Oscar-nominated song “Whee Whe Will My Life Begin,” which led to a spin-off as the 2012 short film “Tangled Ever After” and the 2017 television series “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.”
“Queen Charlotte” and “My Oxford Year” star Corey Multileest told Seven Magazine in the summer that he auditioned for the role of Flynn Ryder, but he wasn’t as confident in his singing ability as Hadid during her audition.
“I think I can say this now because I don’t think it’s happening anymore, but I auditioned because I was ‘tangled’,” said MylChreest. “We don’t have the footage anymore. I deleted it and then burned it, then I burned the phone I filmed. And I burned the room where I did it. And I burned myself… No, it wasn’t very good.
Next is “Moana,” which will open on July 10th in Disney’s live-action remake category.
