Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks are ready for the world to learn more about John Candy.
John Candy: I Love Me – Hanks (47-year-old director) and 48-year-old Reynolds (48-year-old) premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 4th.
On a visit to Tiff’s People/EW and Shutterstock Studio on Friday, Reynolds knew Candy had dealt with anxiety before his death, but “no one needed anyone who said he did it,” he said as he sat down with Colin Hanks, who directed the film.
“You can say, you can just tell,” said the star. “Sometimes you can quickly identify that, like, ‘Oh, there are people with some skills that are cultivated through coping mechanisms,” and so on. What he’s funny – it’s all these things that protect him. ”
“Yeah, I would have guessed it. I’d have put a lot of money on it. I’d be wrong and I’d be happy to be excited about it being wrong, but he’s pleased people,” adds Reynolds, the late comedian whose good deeds and friendly personality are recorded in the film.

“I know I have some of those traits, and mental health that pleases people, they don’t coexist together at all.
“So mental health is talking about it, talking about it. You’re going to be on stage or you take the space and own it and keep it and say, ‘Hey, I’m struggling and I need help,'” he continues. “And that’s hard for people to do. It’s really, really hard. So I feel like I’ve been struggling with it for so long at a time when that guy was beginning to be accepted to talk about it a little more.”
Colin, whose father Tom Hanks appeared in a 1983 Splash and a 1985 volunteer with Candy, says that he can relate to the idea of setting healthy boundaries, but can be called an “ongoing process.”
“It was so obvious because the subject was that, so I spent more time thinking about my mental health in the process of making this,” adds Colin.
He continues: “It’s not fighting a terrible addiction because he was some dark, malicious aspects of his life. He is incredibly humane. How do we deal with our trauma? Isn’t it important? We all got it.
Candy’s daughter, Jennifer Candy Sullivan, is one of the film’s co-producers, as well as her brother, Christopher Candy and her mother, Rosemary Margaret Hollowser.

Jennifer tells people that the idea of boundaries is “what we’re working on,” and refers to her and her siblings. “I’ve always been people and always been. I think that’s also a characteristic of Canada that we want to make sure everyone is (it’s okay). We apologise for everything,” she says. Her father added that he tried to set boundaries by taking financial control.
“He’ll pay things,” she says, or make a quiet donation. “That was him, that was his boundaries because if he could control the situation, he could control what everything would turn out.”
And now she has learned that individuals need to “care for” “mental health, physical health, everything” for themselves. As Colin explains, “I had to wear an oxygen mask first before I could help my child.”
Reynolds points out that he raised his four children and helped him in the same area. “I’ve got them the skills to talk about boundaries with them (and) to keep them out and maintain. That’s important. It also helped me. It seems like a practice for me,” he says.
Released on Thursday hours before the film’s TIFF premiere, the trailer for I Like Me shows a glimpse of fellow comedy Titans who worked with and praised Candy, who was tragically shortened at the age of 43 in 1994.
“I can’t say what was right or wrong about John Candy, but he was my friend,” Bill Murray’s Candy’s Stripes (1981) says at the start of the preview. “And… I don’t want to cry, but when you see him, when you see his face…” He tears and kicks him out.
In addition to Murray, Steve Martin, Katherine O’Hara, Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, Martin Short and Mel Brooks are also featured in documentaries.
According to the summary, the film “characterizes home videos you’ve never seen before, intimate access to family, and candid recollections from collaborators, drawing a larger picture of one of the brightest stars of the 70s, 80s and 90s.”
“It was the story of a son, husband, father, friend and expert, and was driven to bring joy to our audiences and loved ones while fighting the pressures of personal ghosts and Hollywood,” the summary adds.

After a 2019 tribute shared a love for candy over the years, including a 2019 tribute called “Canadian Heroes,” Fellows Great White North Native Reynolds announced the DOC in October 2022.
“John Candy’s trends, I just say I love him,” Reynolds wrote when the star began trending on Twitter, known for its Twitter, which is before the re-release of planes, trains and car 4K. “So much so, @maximumeffort is working on a documentary about his life with @colinhanks. Hope for tears.”
Candy’s children showed support at the time, with Christopher quoting Reynolds, writing, “This is all true.” His sister said, “Boom! So I look forward to working on this with them and our family. This project is in great hands.”
