Whoopi Goldberg and Vanessa Williams appear in Netflix movie

Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams, and Vivica A. Fox are teaming up to star in a new Netflix original comedy movie. The film, titled “Women Like Us,” was produced by the Obamas’ Higher Ground and Charles D. King’s Macro Film Studios.

Tasha Smith (Bel-Air, Survival of the Sixth, The Mayor of Kingstown) will direct from an original screenplay by Ali Kinney (Ginny & Georgia, Love Life), with Tracy Oliver (Harlem, Girls Trip, The Blackening) writing the screenplay. “Women Like Us” is scheduled to begin production this fall in New York City.

The story begins with a newly widowed woman traveling to the Hamptons with her lifelong best friend and sister on what would have been their 30th anniversary. As explained in the logline, “The weekend becomes a day of reckoning with grief, marriage, years of sisterhood, and the realization that dreams have no expiration date.”

Macro’s James Lopez and Poppy Hanks will produce Higher Ground alongside Annika McLaren and Mark R. Wright. Michelle Obama and King will serve as executive producers for Higher Ground and Macro, respectively.

Women Like Us is the first collaboration between 15-time Oscar nominee (and three-time Oscar winner) Macro Film Studios (Judas and the Black Messiah, Fences, One of Them Days) and President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s media company Higher Ground. The film marks the latest collaboration between Netflix and Higher Ground. Other works include “Leave the World Behind,” “American Symphony,” “Rustin,” and the upcoming series “All the Sinners Bleed” and “The Altruists,” as well as a mother-daughter comedy starring Julianne Moore.
