Mel C was almost kicked out of the Spice Girls after an altercation with bandmate Victoria Beckham.
The 52-year-old singer revealed their heated fight during a recent appearance on the Louis Theroux Podcast. Mel C (real name Melanie Chisholm) said it happened at the 1996 BRIT Awards. The Spice Girls were not yet famous, having not yet released their debut single, the 1996 smash hit “Wannabe,” but they had a “great night” drinking champagne and sitting at a table with Lenny Kravitz.
But Sporty Spice said the night then took a turn for the worst.
“We were leaving and I was going to look for a car, and whatever the situation was, I just turned around and said, ‘Victoria, no more,'” she recalled. “I went home, went to bed, and woke up the next morning and was very distressed.”
Mel C said Mel B (Sporty Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) told her they were “disgusted” by her behavior, and the group’s manager also grilled her.
“I was made very clear that if something like this happened again, I would be gone,” she said. “That completely surprised me.”
She admitted she was terrified of “losing everything” over a “minor” incident.
“I could have ruined all my childhood dreams that were now possible,” she said.
In May, Mel C revealed who was the most “boy crazy” of the Spice Girls during their rise to superstardom in the ’90s, saying it was Mel B.
“I think it’s the best success rate…” she began on the Blind Date episode of Cosmopolitan, before Mel B commented, “It was very popular.”
Earlier in the month, she also addressed assumptions about her sexuality while being part of the iconic girl group.
“There’s a lot of different people, there’s people wearing activewear…I’ve had people think or suggest that I’m gay,” she said during an appearance on “The Mitch Thulli Chat Show.”
“Personally, I have no problem with that,” she continued. “I mean, that’s none of their business. But I just thought…to judge that based on how someone looks or what they’re wearing, yeah, that was a little bit un-them.”
Mel C has a 17-year-old daughter, Scarlett, with ex-boyfriend Thomas Starr. She has been dating Australian model Chris Dingwall since November 2023.
