Cineverse and its horror division Bloody Disgusting have acquired U.S. VOD and streaming rights to Woody Beth’s slamdance and horror-fest debut Portal to Hell. A limited theatrical release is planned ahead of Cineverse’s digital release this summer.
An indie horror comedy starring Trey Holland (Diabolical), Romina Dugo (12 Monkeys), Keith David (The Thing), and Richard Kind (Spin City). “Portal to Hell” follows a debt collector, Dan (Holland), who lives an ordinary life until a portal opens in his local laundromat, and then a demon (Kind) is sent to drag his neighbor, Mr. Bobshank (David), to hell for an unpaid debt. Dan’s specialty is helping people settle their debts, but when the devil offers Bobshank three souls in exchange for his freedom, he refuses.
The film will be written and directed by Beth (who also wrote the 2024 Blacklist screenplay Total Landscape) and produced by Holland, Lucas Ford and Tom Watts. Little Shadows is produced by Hello Moon, Ford Films, This is Swinton, Dalmatian Cow and Baked Studios. Executive producers include David, Dionne Lee Williams, Matthew Dean Russell, and George A. Lucas.
Michael McDonald, Casey Diedrick, Trevor Newlin, Ryan Forese, Kevin Fontaine, and Mone Weir round out the cast.
“We are thrilled to bring ‘Portal to Hell’ to Cineverse and work with a group of passionate genre insiders to release the film. Their reach and partnership felt like a good home to bring our film to a wider audience,” the filmmakers said in a statement.
The deal was negotiated by Cecilia Brush and Michael Paszt of Raven Banner and Dan Fisher, vice president of acquisitions at Cineverse. Raven Banner is representing worldwide rights and will continue to sell territories available at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Other deals for the same title include Lighthouse (Germany) and 9th Planet (Poland).
“‘Portal to Hell’ is exactly the kind of sharp, highly entertaining genre film that Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting audiences will respond to; it’s inventive, funny, truly horror-oriented, and features a great cast led by Keith David and Richard Kind,” Fisher said.
