Tom Holland shares his thoughts on the hot topic of AI and isn’t shy about explaining why AI “has no soul.”
“Creativity is safe from AI because it has to do with human experience,” Holland said on Spanish talk show El Hormiguero with Zendaya on Wednesday. “It’s about feelings and understanding each other.”
“AI can sift through data, but it can’t understand people’s emotions. It can’t tell the difference between happiness and sadness,” Holland continued. “The way artists paint is to express themselves, not to imitate anything. So I feel protected.”
Holland’s appearance in El Hormiguero comes as he prepares for a busy summer movie season. First, he will appear as Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited “Odyssey,” which is scheduled to be released on July 24th. He will then return to the Marvel Universe in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31st. Zendaya also appears in both photos.
Holland is one of many actors and filmmakers speaking out about broader concerns about AI and job security in Hollywood. On Monday night, “Frankenstein” director Guillermo del Toro warned of rapidly evolving technology, saying, “We are on the verge of becoming film illiterate. We are on the verge of becoming movie illiterate.”
Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock have spoken out in favor of efforts to understand and incorporate AI into everyday life, and Martin Scorsese has said he will partner with an AI company to use the technology to storyboard his films.
Holland was last seen in The Crowded Room, Uncharted, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
