Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Tahereh Mafi’s best-selling dystopian YA series “Shutter Me.”
The film deal coincides with the 15th anniversary of the debut of the first book in the original series, Shutter Me, which has become a BookTok phenomenon with more than 15 million copies sold worldwide and more than 500,000 social posts with related hashtags. “Shatter Me” centers on Juliet Ferrers, a teenage girl with a deadly touch who confronts an oppressive totalitarian government called The Reestablishment. According to the synopsis, the series follows Juliet’s journey to “discover her power, find strength, and navigate a dystopian world of romance and rebellion.”
Director Mafi said of the film deal, “We’ve been extremely fortunate to have a loyal fan base over the past 15 years, and we’re excited about the opportunity to bring the world and characters of Shutter Me to life in a way that honors our fans and their love for these books.” “Warner Bros. has been a great partner in the past and we look forward to creating memorable cinematic experiences that will take the series to new heights.”
Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, Sunswept Entertainment’s Karen Rosenfelt and Langley Park Pictures’ Kevin McCormick will produce the film project. The project is the first to be announced under McCormick’s new studio production deal. Mafi will serve as executive producer.
The Shatter Me series is published in 38 territories and 34 languages. Last year, Muffy published “Watch Me,” the first book in a new series called “The New Republic,” set in the world of “Shatter Me.” The book, set 10 years after the collapse of The Establishment, quickly became a number one New York Times bestseller and remained at the top for seven weeks. The second book in the New Republic series, Release Me, was released in April and quickly became a #1 bestseller. The third book, “Escape Me,” will be published in September.
Mafi is repped by Writers House and Anonymous Content. Anonymous Content signed the deal on behalf of Writers House.
