The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a new global award honoring moviegoing and the traditional theatrical experience. The Academy Marquee Theater List aims to honor the most notable movie theaters around the world and recognize the best exhibits, celebrating theaters that “offer an outstanding audience experience, preserve the history of film, and serve as cultural anchors for their communities.”
In spring 2027, 50 theaters will be selected for the initial Marquee theater list, including 25 theaters in the United States and 25 internationally. A committee of Academy members across all branches selects the theater and the Academy Board of Directors approves.
Eligible movie theaters must be brick-and-mortar locations that are open year-round. You can submit up to 10 theaters operated by the same theater chain or owner in one submission cycle.
The evaluation criteria for movie theaters are as follows: Visual and audio presentation. Programming; Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. Historical significance and preservation. Theater design, lighting and conditions. And concessions.
The application is currently available. For more information, visit Oscars.org.
