Tom Holland recently told Empire that he’s looking forward to handing over the role of Spider-Man to the next person to take over the Marvel franchise.
“I would love to be a part of building the next chapter, whether it’s Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman or anything like that, whoever’s next,” Holland said. “Whatever that will be, I don’t know. But if I can do what Downey did for me, I’ll be very happy and ride off into the sunset.”
Holland refers to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, who first brought Holland’s Peter Parker into the MCU in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (Downey is scheduled to return to the MCU as the villainous Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday).
Since debuting as the red and blue webslinger, Holland has emerged as one of Marvel’s most valuable stars. His first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, got off to a strong start in 2017, grossing $880 million worldwide. But its two sequels, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, exploded to $1.1 billion and $1.9 billion worldwide, respectively. “Spider-Man”s latest adventure, “Brand New Day,” opens in theaters on July 31st and is poised to set another box office record.
In a recent profile in GQ, Holland said that he had to film some additional scenes for Brand New Day, which he described as “extras.”
“I can tell you we don’t need what we’re doing,” he said. “The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little more humor. We’re layering the villain plotline in new ways and some really fun stuff.”
