Will lightning strike Colleen Hoover a fourth time?
Amazon MGM has released the trailer for the twisted thriller “Verity,” the author’s fourth novel in two years. Director Hoover’s three previous films, It Ends With Us, Reminders of Him, and Regretting You, were all box office successes. “Verity” will be released nationwide on October 2nd.
In “Verity,” Dakota Johnson plays Rowen Ashley, a struggling novelist who is commissioned to write the latest work of best-selling author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway, after an accident prevents her from completing her latest work. As Rowen works towards completing the project, he discovers a disturbing unfinished manuscript that calls into question Verity’s mental stability. Josh Hartnett, Brady Wagner, Asel Swango, and Daniel Echevarria round out the cast.
In the official teaser, Rowen walks around the Crawford household in a silk robe while Verity is fast asleep in bed. Since Verity is basically bedridden, her husband Jeremy begins a romance with Rowen. But when their lips meet, Rowen notices blood on his mouth and realizes something even more sinister is going on. It’s Verity she’s kissing, not Jeremy. Rowen threw herself back and shrieked in sheer terror.
Verity teases in the two-minute teaser that “there’s darkness ahead.”
This year marks Amazon MGM’s first full-scale theatrical release. After missing the mark with January and February releases of “Mercy,” “Crime 101,” and “Melania,” the studio scored a coveted box office success with “Project Hail Mary,” which has grossed $600 million worldwide to date. Given Hoover’s promising box office track record, “Verity” seems poised to score. The popular author’s hit books – 2024’s It Ends With Us, 2025’s Regretting You, and this year’s Reminders of Him – highlighted the demand for stories that focus on women.
Before “Verity” hits theaters in October, Amazon MGM will release “Sheep Detectives,” Nicholas Galitzine’s “Masters of the Universe” and “How to Rob a Bank,” directed by “John Wick” director David Leitch.
