The “Heart-Eyes Killer”, a crazy murderer who attacks on Valentine’s Day, is making a comeback on the big screen.
Paramount Pictures will co-produce and co-finance Heart Eyes 2, with a release date set for February 11, 2028. Sony Pictures distributed the first film, which grossed $33 million worldwide in 2025 on an $18 million budget.
In “Heart Eyes,” Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding play two co-workers who are mistaken for lovers by a serial killer whose calling card is to murder couples on the most romantic holiday of the year. Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster round out the cast. It’s unclear who from that group will return for the sequel. Details of the story have not been revealed either.
Josh Reuben is returning to direct Heart Eyes 2. He will also co-write the screenplay with Darcy Fowler, based on the story by Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy. Spyglass Media co-produced and co-financed “Heart Eyes” and its sequel. Landon and Divide/Conquer will also serve as producers.
Although “Heart Eyes” was not a huge hit at the box office, it was well received in the horror genre. Variety’s Courtney Howard hailed the film as a breezy romantic slasher that cuts with charm, adding, “‘Heart Eyes’ makes us swoon and squirm in equal measure.”
Last year, Ruben suggested to Variety that Heart Eyes has “potential for longevity” through sequels and spinoffs.
“I say this: You can recreate the structure of every great romantic comedy, from ‘His Girl Friday’ to ‘Defending Your Life,’ and you can put Heart Eyes at the center of that story and have him flash and cut around,” he said. “That’s what’s interesting about this movie. I’m certainly interested in whoever the filmmaker is, but there’s an opportunity to genuinely create and recreate the feel of a romantic comedy or a ‘Bridget Jones’ or ‘Love Actually,’ but actually being able to make people afraid of this psychopathic killer.”
