Ryan Reynolds to write new Deadpool movie, but as a ‘supporting role’

When Ryan Reynolds was asked about Deadpool returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview on Sunday Today, he admitted that he had already written a few things. There’s no word on what the actor has in store for the foul-mouthed superhero, but it doesn’t appear to be a standalone Deadpool 4 movie.

“I’ve written something, but I don’t think we’ll ever center him again,” Reynolds said, revealing that as much as Reynolds has played the character repeatedly, Deadpool’s life as a leading man on screen may be over. “He’s a supporting character. He’s a great guy in the group.”

Speculation is rife on social media that Reynolds will return as Deadpool in a secret role in Avengers: Doomsday, which is released in December of this year, but Reynolds has downplayed the rumors. Reynolds said in a December 2024 interview with THR that he hopes the character will intersect with the Avengers or the X-Men without joining either group.

“If he goes either way, we’re done,” Reynolds said. “Deadpool works very well in appearing in the X-Men and the Avengers, but he always needs to be an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated, but not accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame with humor only works if it’s used to fill in his many deficiencies. If he becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”

Reynolds also explained that at the time he was leaning toward not making any more solo Deadpool movies, saying, “It’s more effective to put Deadpool at the center and take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. You can’t do that anymore. The fourth time around, it feels a little repetitive and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing the fun. There’s still a full and strong Deadpool arc.”

Directed by Reynolds, Deadpool officially entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2024 blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. The first two “Deadpool” movies were released in 2016 and 2018 and each grossed $780 million worldwide.
