Alec Baldwin has been considering retirement since cinematographer Halina Hutchins died in an accident on the set of the movie The Last in 2021.
“I ended up staying at home a lot. I was home with my kids for three and a half years and didn’t really work,” the “30 Rock” alum recalled on Monday’s episode of the podcast “The Hollywood Reporter Awards Chater.”
“I don’t want to leave the house anymore,” Baldwin continued. “I don’t like it. I don’t want to work anymore. I don’t work. I really don’t want to work. I want to retire and be home with my kids.”
On October 21, 2021, Hutchins was shot and killed on the set of a Western movie when a prop gun carried by a Beetlejuice actor went off. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was also injured in the incident.
More than two years after the shooting, Baldwin was charged with manslaughter and pleaded not guilty.
He said in the podcast that the shooting was “extremely painful,” adding that it was “indescribably difficult to respond to.”
Baldwin has pleaded not guilty, claiming he did not pull the trigger and did not know the gun was loaded with real bullets instead of dummy bullets. His case was ultimately dismissed in July 2024.
Despite the tragic circumstances, Baldwin was forced to complete the project.
“As part of my reconciliation with my husband (Matthew), I had to come back to Montana and finish the film ‘The Last,'” he elaborated in an interview Monday.
“It affected me financially, career-wise, my wife, kids, health-wise, everything. I was very unwell. I mean, I had to finish it. We gave him the movie and said, ‘You sell it and do what you want with it.'”
Baldwin also detailed how, while finishing the film, he suffered from a neurological condition called orthostatic hypotension, which left him incredibly unwell. Orthostatic hypotension is a “significant drop in blood pressure” that occurs after standing up after sitting or lying down, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“I fell on top of my wife once, and it was insane. It was horrible,” he recalled, adding that he was “in bed for eight days” and in physical therapy for two weeks.
“I had to ride back to Montana to finish the movie or they were going to indict me,” he said. “So, I’m going to do it. I’m going to reach my goal. Because of my illness, I can’t perform as well as I want to, but I did the best I could.”
Since filming, Baldwin has worked on several projects, including 2024’s Kid Santa, Clear Cut, and Crescent City. He also starred in the 2026 Spanish comedy “Torrente for President,” playing President Trump.
Last summer, Alec, his wife Hilaria Baldwin, and their seven children (Carmen, 12, Rafael, 10, Leonardo, 9, Romeo, 7, Eduardo, 5, Marilu, 5, and Ilaria, 3) appeared on TLC’s reality show The Baldwins.
Cameras followed the family in their Hamptons home as they tried to move on with their lives amidst the trial.
But two years later, Alec is still embroiled in the court system.
In January 2025, the “Saturday Night Live” actor filed a civil lawsuit in Santa Fe, New Mexico, alleging malicious prosecution and civil rights violations. In court documents, he accuses prosecutors and investigators of defamation, alleging they intentionally mishandled evidence during the case.
