Britney Spears’ ex-husband Sam Asghari acknowledged on Wednesday night that “people make mistakes” after the singer was arrested for drunk driving in California.
The 32-year-old model and fitness trainer spoke about her embattled ex-girlfriend’s shocking arrest in an interview with Fox News on Friday.
“When it comes to people making mistakes, I understand that, but I think everyone has a right to privacy. I hope the press learns from the past and gives her the privacy she needs,” Asghari told the outlet.
The “Toxic” singer and Asghari married in June 2022 after dating for many years. The two separated just 14 months later amid allegations of infidelity and erratic behavior, and divorced in May 2024.
Despite their tumultuous and short-lived marriage, Asghari said, more than a year after their divorce was finalized, he “will always love her.”
“Our marriage was very real to me,” he told People magazine in August 2025. “As short as it may have been, we were together for seven years. I was in love with her and will always love her and wish her happiness always.”
Spears, 44, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after she was seen driving in and out of a BMW in California on Wednesday night.
Page Six has confirmed that the troubled pop star was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County around 9:28 p.m. local time and booked at 3:02 a.m.
Spears was also taken to the hospital to have blood drawn so authorities could measure her blood alcohol level before being released from police custody at 6:07 a.m. Thursday.
The California Highway Patrol told Page Six on Thursday that Spears was suspected of being under the influence of a cocktail of drugs and alcohol when she was taken into custody.
“This was a totally unacceptable and unfortunate incident,” Spears’ longtime manager Cade Hudson told Page Six in a statement about Spears’ arrest.
“Britney intends to take the right steps and abide by the law. We hope this is the first step in the long overdue changes that must occur in Britney’s life. We hope she gets the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
Spears’ court date is scheduled for May 4.
But Asghari isn’t the only ex-husband of the “Stronger” singer to speak out after he was arrested for drunk driving.
Jason Alexander, who was married to Spears for 55 hours in 2004, defended her on social media, urging everyone to “slow down” and “get the facts” on the Grammy Awards.
“Rumors spread faster than facts and suddenly someone is being judged before the truth comes out,” Alexander, 44, said on Instagram. “Britney Spears is entitled to the same things as anyone else: facts, fairness, and due process.”
Kevin Federline, 47, has not yet spoken publicly about Spears’ arrest.
Sources claimed that Federline’s recent memoir, “You Thought You Knew,” was to blame for the “downhill” spiral that led to Spears’ DUI arrest.
“What really pushed her over the edge was Kevin’s book, and it was all downhill from there,” a source told Page Six. “It had a huge emotional impact on her.”
The couple married in 2004 and had two sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, but separated in 2006. The divorce was finalized the following year.
