Katey Sagal’s son praised the “Married with Kids” star for “getting along”.
Jackson White, who starred as Stephen DeMarco in Tell Me Rise, opened up about the example of his real-life TV star mother who struggled with alcohol as a coping mechanism.
White recalled growing up with divorced parents, drinking with her father in her youth, and using resentment as fuel for relationships, which she realized was self-destructive.
“My mom was supportive,” White said during an episode of “Call Her Daddy.” “She did. She gathered her children together a long time ago. And I found that you can gather your children’s children, too. So my mother was a really great example. And I want a lot of things. Like, I want a lot of things in this life.”
White explained that she didn’t let anything stop her from achieving her family and career goals in life.
“If you’re being stopped from getting those things, and you’re seeing signs that you’re not getting those things, if you miss an audition, if you don’t respond well on the phone,” he said. “You just have to focus on it. But you have to be self-aware.”
“The results are what motivates us to do it,” he told host Alexandra Cooper. “And if there are no consequences, it can go on and on in some cases.”
Sagal played White’s mother in the popular series “Tell Me Rise.” Initially, he did not want to share the spotlight with the “Sons of Anarchy” star.
“You have that little kid thing where you’re like, ‘No, that’s mine,’ right?” he told Cooper. “But then I thought, ‘Oh, okay. No, it’s great.'” I thought it had really come full circle, and I thought it was a joke when[Meghan Oppenheimer]said she wanted to ask[Sagal]. ”
“I thought, ‘Oh, that would be interesting.’ And they did, and… it worked.”
White also got to work with his real-life girlfriend, Grace Van Patten. The two played lovers in this toxic drama.
Reflecting on working with his mother and girlfriend, White explained that it can be difficult not to blur the line between show and reality.
“You want to make sure they don’t mix, but I think they do,” he says. “You believe in your work, and you’re probably a little jaded. So you take on a little bit of everything, and that was tough. It was tough not to blur the lines.”
Sehgal, now 72, shot to fame after landing a role in Married…With Children.
She later won a Golden Globe Award for her role as Gemma Teller Morrow in Sons of Anarchy.
Sehgal went on to appear on hit shows such as “8 Simple Rules,” “The Conners,” “Shameless,” and “Rebel.”
